 Job Summary:

As the Content Designer for the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS), you will be on the Learning & Development team for the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS) and State Examination System (SES). In this role, you will help NMLS and SES to be better, more intuitive systems by writing UI text that enhances user experience, developing knowledge base architecture to facilitate discovery of information, and creating standards to ensure a consistent voice across our products.

 As the Learning & Development team improves training programs and materials, we will rely on your technical writing, information architecture, and information design skills for the creation of and updates to help documentation. You will assist in all technical writing aspects of NMLS and SES by preparing quality training and resource materials for a variety of audiences, including: state regulatory agencies, industry firms and individuals, and call center representatives using delivery methods that include online help, e-learning, and webinars.

You will regularly collaborate with business analysts, QA testers, and developers to enhance seamless navigation through instructional text and timely support for system enhancements. You will also be working in conjunction with our Businesses Services and IT departments to help manage the design and release of our new knowledge base and the documentation contained within it.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop content strategies, information architectures, and CMS structures.
  • Create content strategies and models, metadata and taxonomy requirements, sitemaps, CMS specifications, content governance documentation, and the like.
  • Participate on project teams as a subject matter expert on content strategy, information architecture, and usability for the knowledge base.
  • Collaborate with development teams and project managers to define the content strategy and write internal and external content for NMLS and SES digital products.
  • Gather, analyze, translate, and compose technical information into clear readable documents to be used by technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Create and maintain various project artifacts and end user documentation including functional requirements, design documents, user guides, style guides, publishing standards, etc.
  • May be responsible for coordinating the display of graphics and the production of the document.
  • Apply and evolve SRR’s content standards in collaborations with the development team to ensure product capabilities and usage are well explained to all end users.
  • Manage revisions to knowledge resources to enhance their utility.
  • Create systems, processes and guidelines for streamlining and extending the production of documentation and support materials across teams.
  • Identify problems that users encounter in leveraging products and services, and work with the product management team to implement solutions.
  • Write UI text that facilitates user navigation, as well on-boarding, promos, error messages, instructional materials, and other components of the end-to-end user experience.
  • Drive vision for product language and content across a product or subject-matter domain and ensure cohesive product narratives; document strategies with guidelines and establish best practices and strategy principles.
  • Test work, concepts, and documentation with users and interview subject matter experts to gain the insight necessary to further content and concepts.
  • Shape the product tone of voice guidelines for all product communication, driving consistency.
  • Produce clear, organized, actionable rules and documentation for software and web design to aid in establishing a foundational design system.


  • Bachelor’s degree (in English, Communications, or Library Sciences a plus)
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of topic-based authoring (DITA/XML) and help authoring tools such as RoboHelp, MadCap Flare, or FrameMaker.
  • Aptitude for strong visual display of information and image production as part of effective content design. 
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of information management and information architecture fundamentals such as: version control, content management, single sourcing, metadata, and taxonomies.
  • Proven knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3 is a strong plus.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite tools, image creation applications, and wireframing tools is a strong plus. 
  • Previous experience in content strategy, information architecture, UX design, user research or related is a strong plus.
  • Previous experience in graphic design using Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop is desired.
